Lessons from New Competency-Based High Schools: Leaders Reflect on Design and Launch
Location: Southern Hemisphere II
In this interactive workshop, first-year principals will share work products and real problems of practice they are facing as they launch new competency-based public high schools. Each of these principals has opened a new district high school in Fall 2015 in partnership with Springpoint as part of Carnegie Corporation of New York’s Opportunity by Design initiative. Principals will address the decision points of implementing their programs and share strategies with aspiring practitioners. Join us to hear from the leaders of Denver School of Innovation and Sustainable Design, 360 High School in the Providence Public School District, and the International High School at Langley Park in Prince George’s County Public Schools.

First-Hand Accounts: Students and Teachers Share Their Experiences in New, Competency-Based High Schools
Location: Northern Hemisphere BC
In this session, students and teachers from two competency-based high schools (E 3 agle Academy in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and The Urban Assembly Maker Academy in New York City) will reflect on their experience pioneering innovative, personalized school models. These models were designed in partnership with Springpoint as part of Carnegie Corporation of New York’s Opportunity by Design initiative. Session participants will engage with students and teachers as they share first-hand learnings from inside these schools. Above all, this will be a great opportunity to hear from students, whose voices are often overlooked in discussions like these.
