SXSWedu’s PanelPicker community voting is open and we need your votes for Springpoint’s three session ideas! Voting closes on Friday, September 2nd, so make your voice heard before then to help us present in Austin in March. Keep reading for more details on our sessions, which focus on innovative school design and the often untold stories and perspectives of adults and young people in those schools.

Where Do Students Go When Schools Fail Them?

This session will focus on schools and organizations that serve and support off-track students and prepare them to succeed in college and career. It will feature panelists who have founded and led such schools and are working to expand their impact, including JoEllen Lynch, Executive Director of Springpoint; Leah Hamilton, Director of Education at the Barr Foundation; and Beth Anderson, Founder & CEO at Phoenix Charter Academy Network. Cassandra Charles, a student at DePaul Law School, will also join the panel to share how her high school engaged and supported her in persevering and graduating with the skills necessary to excel in college and beyond. Panelists will discuss the challenges that off-track students face and explore how some schools are designed to engage these students and graduate them prepared to participate fully in a range of communities.

StorySLAM: The Truth About School Start-Up

This panel will use The Moth’s live storytelling format to feature students, teachers, and school leaders as they share five-minute stories about their experiences in new, innovative high schools. See Springpoint’s very own Victoria Crispin tell her story as she reflects on her past experience as the Director of Student Services at The Urban Assembly Bronx Academy of Letters, and discusses the importance of building pathways of opportunities for students. This panel will be a great chance to gain honest, authentic insight into the trials and triumphs of designing, launching and attending new high schools that “do school differently.”

School Design Mini-Hackathon

In this interactive workshop, leaders from Springpoint will guide session attendees through an accelerated version of the organization’s student-centered school design process. Facilitators will use a comprehensive set of resources and tools and guide participants through a mock school design process, grounded in student data and a strong understanding of their specific students’ needs. This sample design processes will also equip session attendees to replicate these design elements in a way that suits their own communities.
