Dear Ed Tech Guru: Your Burning Questions About Education Technology, Answered!
Thursday, October 27 from 10 – 11am. South Terrace.

In this “Dear Abby”-style session, two Ed Tech gurus will answer common questions around Ed Tech. Send us or Tweet at us with questions for our two gurus, Erin Mote, co-founder of Brooklyn Lab Charter School, and Michele Phillips, a school data specialist who has worked with competency-based high schools in New York City and beyond. We will also be live Tweeting the answers so join us on Twitter if you can’t attend the session.

StorySLAM: Competency-Based School Leaders on “Doing School Differently”
Thursday, October 27 from 2:30 – 3:30pm. Room 303A.

Following The Moth’s live stories format, educators and students will share stories from their experiences in new, innovative high schools. Their five-minute stories will discuss the unique challenges, learnings, and successes in launching new, competency-based schools that strive for equity. Audience members will serve as judges, and storytellers will receive CBE-themed prizes. Our very own Victoria Crispin recently told her story of a student she advised as a Director of Student Services at Bronx Letters Academy.

This Isn’t What I Learned in School”: A Chain Reaction Panel with Teachers in New, Competency-based High School
Thursday, October 27 from 4:15 – 5:15pm. Room 303A.

Switching from a traditional grading system to competency-based model is hard work. Teachers need support to learn this new skill and implement it in their classrooms. In this panel, we will hear from teachers who are doing the real work of day-to-day competency-based teaching, and continuing to refine and hone their practice. Teachers will interview one another in a chain reaction format, with each interviewee becoming an interviewer for the next teacher.

School Design Mini-Hackathon: A Student-Centered Process for New School Model Development
Friday, October 28 from 10 – 12:15pm. Room 301B.

Join us for an interactive workshop on school design from to take part in an accelerated sample school design and prototyping process grounded in student needs. Working in small groups, participants will tackle key questions and decisions about instructional design, staffing, and competencies.
