Veritas Prep Charter School, Springfield, MA

As an equity advocate, community activist and educator, Candice Person has spent close to 20 years perfecting the craft of transforming the minds of youth and the adults who teach them. Candice Person began teaching as a New York City Teaching Fellow during which she worked as a middle school teacher in the South Bronx. Since then, she has taught almost every grade and most subjects as a special educator and English Instructor. Candice’s educator journey has taken her as far as Louisville, Kentucky to Chesterfield County Virginia, and finally back home to Springfield, Massachusetts, where she helped transform Veritas Preparatory Charter School into an Anti-Racist organization.

Candice believes that educators learn best from other educators. She presented her first professional development as a peer educator when she was just 14 years old! Since then she has designed and delivered professional development on best teaching practices to educators as a consultant with The Western Massachusetts Writing Project and on equity, bias and racism as the Veritas Anti-Racism Professional Development Coordinator. Currently, Candice is the Assistant Principal of Veritas Prep High School, an innovative, student centered early college program.

Candice holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Howard University, a Master’s of Science in Education from Mercy College and an MFA in Creative Writing from Spalding University. In her free time, Candice enjoys shopping, organizing community equity events, scouting out the best sushi in town with her daughter and randomly singing and dancing when the spirit hits her. She lives in Springfield Massachusetts with her two children.
