Millbury Jr/Sr High School, Millbury, MA

MaryAnn is an educator living in Millbury, Massachusetts with her husband of 33 years, Bill, her 95 year old mother, Nina, and her adorable dog, Sherlock. She has one son, Will,  who lives in Connecticut with his wife, Nisha. MaryAnn is the STEM instructional/data coach at Millbury Jr/Sr High School, where she has worked for the past eight years. She started in Millbury as a science teacher, eventually becoming the science department head, a role she still serves in. MaryAnn is a former research scientist, specifically a flow cytometrist. She received her B.A. in biochemistry from Brandeis University and her Master’s in Biology from Harvard University. She believes the best way for students to learn science is by doing science. As the department head, she encourages science teachers to provide students with many opportunities to engage in the science practices and teach content through inquiry. She has brought OpenSciEd and Project Lead the Way courses into the school because of their focus on equity and applied learning. In her free time, MaryAnn loves to be outdoors. She loves to garden, but she only grows things she can eat. She also loves to go hiking and one of her favorite spots is Purgatory Chasm in Sutton, MA. While hiking through these woods, MaryAnn often dreams about teaching science to students in this beautiful outdoor classroom.
